Rolfing is often done in a series consisting of ten to thirteen sessions. It is not required however, that you do the full series. The practitioner starts by evaluating the client’s structure through visual observation, testing and movement pattern identification. The client is then asked to lie on the table as the practitioner applies specific pressure to shift the disorganized fascial patterns. The client is often asked to participate in releasing restrictions by breathing into the area or making synchronized movements. The work is done in a complex arrangement to promote lasting change as the nervous system, hence the body, reorganizes to a more balanced state. Each session builds upon the results of the previous one, so the results are progressive and cumulative. |

Rolfers also work with rhythms of respiration and other responses of the body. We educate the client and introduce them to their new found freedom and also suggest movements the client can do on their own to further the process. Although the full series is desirable to work the whole body adequately enough to achieve lasting results, one can still see benefit from fewer sessions. Since freeing the trapped and irritated nerves is a key component of the rolfing series and is on the agenda for each session to achieve greater structural change and pain relief, fewer sessions can still address recent or acute challenges. Usually two to four sessions can bring stabilization to the system. It is not recommended to receive any other form of connective tissue or deep massage during the basic series. Rolfers are systematically reorganizing the structure and function of the individual. Most clients that receive chiropractic adjustments find that the adjustments are easier and more long lasting. Some people do not feel the need for continued chiropractic care. The important thing to remember is to listen to your deepest knowing and follow that guidance. Except for the day after the fourth and fifth sessions you may do any activities that you feel are right. It is important to listen to what your body needs after each session. You are engaging in a process of reorganization that suggests a re-evaluation of not only what you do, but also who you are. The more time and conscious attention you give to the potential of the integration, the more benefit you receive. Regular exercise is encouraged. |
